Gifts for the Discerning Cook
When only the best will suffice, try these rare finds
Ultimate Chef's Knife Designed for Shun by Bob Kramer (the Stradivari of bladesmiths), this hefty eight-inch chef's knife offers impeccable balance and a gorgeous Pakkawood handle that feels as though it was shaped specifically for your palm. It might sound expensive, but it costs far less than Kramer's other impossible-to-find knives and it's worth every penny. $340 (which includes a copy of the book Knives Cooks Love) at Sur La Table, 75 Spring St. (at Crosby St.); 212-966-3375 or surlatable.com
Natural Cutting Board We love the rough-hewn edge of Architec's Bare Board, which is made from eco-friendly acacia. Its grippy rubber pads prevent it from sliding around the counter, and its rich grain and size (17 by 11 inches) make it a handsome serving piece, too. $25 at Whole Foods markets; wholefoods.com
Brooklyn-Made Copper Pans Hammersmith copper pans are handmade in Brooklyn by a company that's been in business since the 19th century. The pans are lined with tin, which is far superior to the more common stainless steel lining. Though pricey (this brass-handled 10-inch fry pan is $200), it'll be the last cookware you'll ever need to buy. $175 and up at The Brooklyn Kitchen, 616 Lorimer St. (at Skillman Ave.), Brooklyn; 718-389-2982 or thebrooklynkitchen.com
